Why I'm not around so much anymore

Hello,

as most of you know I didn't play UT for ages, can't even remember the last time I played UT.
And I'm idling in IRC for 3 to 4 months or so, until today as a exception.

Not play UT when there is a chance of a walk in the sunshine.
Not play UT when there is a chance of a cuddle from your partner.
Always play music whilst playing UT and pay it more attention than the game.
Stop playing immediately and pay attention to them when your mother, brother, sister or partner interupts you whilst a couple of steps away from capping the flag.
Smoke(if u do smoke) and eat, drink tea, beer, wine or coffee freely whilst playing in a game.
Pet your pussy cat if he walks over your keyboard whilst playing, stop to give him a stroke.

I'm sure you can all think of other redemial activities

at that time it made me laugh and I posted some "funny" remarks about it. But a while ago I realized that his response to my remarks, saying that was him 3 years ago, really suited me.

When I woke up, I red the forum. Same thing after work and before going to bed. And off course playing UT on every occasion I got.
I never went outside, every free time was involving UT. Even when I got symptoms of RSI, it wouldn't stop me. I quit my second passion in life, playing guitar, just to be aible to play UT again and even joined the admin team of Truff, after leaving my "clan".

But beginning of 2004 I started playing bass-guitar, since it's not so much "work" as playing guitar. Even formed a band which is going fine at this moment, already got 2 live performences after 8 months of practising, and will be on regular base for sure this year. With other words, I started to go outside again.

I think the people who know me a bit, noticed me not being present as much as I used to, since may of this year. Reasson: > female
After being single for a couple of years (no time, UT first), I met a girl and slowely started to put my energy in here and the band instead.
Also a coule of sickness/deaths in the family wasn't very motivating for me to trying to get back on the same level of commitment I had before.

And the fact I have a very intense job, working a lot of late and early shifts, weekends and extra hours isn't very motivating as well.

Why am I telling you all of this ? Just to explaing why I am not around so much anymore.

I just posted in the admin section, I'm resigning from the Truff/Server admin team. I can't deal with the fact I'm part of a team that is doing so much work and putting so much time and energy in this community, while I'm never around anymore.

After being away for such a long time, it's impossible to rejoin just like that. Although Truff started with only one newbie server and became a very large community with lots of servers, the end isn't still in sight. We still get new members and with all this new people joining since I'm away, I almost feel like a stranger.

I mean, just take the new forum, online for 13 days and almost 2900 posts: That's 220 posts a day, very hard to keep up to date with everything.

So today I decided to try to take advice in the wise words of Kitten. Will this mean I'm never around anymore ?
Nope, I will make UT part of fun again. Playing a couple of games when feeling up to it, or joining a nice conversation on IRC on a quiet night.

I want to thank all of the Truff and server admins and the old guard for the great time I had, I really love you all.
I'm very proud to have been part of a very special admin team of a very unique community, and hope to find my way back to friendly and funny UT one of these days.
Hope to meet you and all new players soon on one of the servers (most likely insta).

Altough I miss my old life very much, I just have to take a different path in life and slow down on UT. Just to see what will happen if energy is putted in other things.

I will always be availible for everybody who needs help or has certain questions. Just PM'me and I will respond to it.
Same for the truff admin team, if you ever need a hand with a league, translations, etc etc, I will be here for you.

Good luck Headshot, I think you are so very right with the things you have said. RL has to always come first and sometimes its easy to forget that cuddling up on the sofa with the person you love is just as great as a dam good game of UT.

Headshot, really sad you don't spend as much time on the servers as you used to , you were one of the people who made me realise at the time, perhaps I wasn't an intermediate player anymore, and, along with vendor, coached me onto the open server. I do remember your nice pm you sent me after I had apologised, it meant a lot at the time. Youre a great admin, i really wish you could spend more time on UT, you will be sorely missed, especially those nice warning you did from irc!!!

I would like to publicly thank Headshot for all his great work over a considerable period of time - this work includes adminning the servers, organising leagues, but what I think the Admin team will miss most of all is your input into those tricky decisions we have to make from time to time. It is in those circumstances that your presence will be most missed by the team - your contributions are always well thought-out and command respect from all of us. Your input is unique, and cannot really be replaced.

But your resignation is clearly an opportunity for you to develop more fully other interests in your life, and that is something that everyone in the community wishes you well with - especially as you will not be totally dissapearing.

Is there life after UT? You gave the answer yourself "yes" ofcourse. You say some smart things for many ppl around who should consider some more social life. I'll hope you find the good mixture of all your hobbies and work and family/gf. All this is ofcourse also in Kitten's post.

If you've got time, give me a visit with your gf. I live in a nice part of the Netherlands. I will be glad to show you around. Best in summer when nature is at it's best and the terasses are full.

There is more to life than UT
There is more to life than playing computer games of any type and on any platform.

You have to have an interest in other things as well, a healthy balance.

The Truff community will know that i am not around as much these days, i like to do other things from time to time. I have other interests as well, music, films, TV etc etc. Its not healthy to be sat in front of a PC all day, i do that at work, i like to do other things when i get home.

I like a game of UT now and then and i do the radio stuff as well but i know that i will never be a better player than i am at the moment, i'm not sure i want to be anyway, its only a game and i play for fun.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do Headshot and have fun, do what i do, do what you feel like doing, if you feel like a game then have a game if not do something else......

i keep thinking i play too much UT, i'm sat at a computer all day doing CAD work then i go home and play UT all night. but as i've just sent off an email asking for truff membership i ain't gonna slow down just yet. maybe i should spend more time with my bmx, visit some more skateparks. at least whenever my girlfriend walks in the room i stop playing (unless i'm carrying the flag but that can't be helped can it??). she doesn't particularly like UT and i don't particularly like neighbours or eastenders so we're even there :D

Well, what a great post on such a 'sad' subject. We didn't play together that often but you were always good fun and extremely helpful in honing my limited skills. There is more to life than UT and I agree with your sentiments completely - have fun and take care, Headshot.

I remember KItten*s post too. He said he noticed he thought in CgI. Like me when I walk with my gf through some building or stuff, I tell her "This wall could be done only with some tricky methods..." or when we travel in train and pass some old factory or giant metal building stuff I tell her "WOoow that 'd be an arena you know... And atop there, the deemer." 8)

UT is "real" for me in a way cus I sit here and talk to living people but I know where you*re coming from and your gf must be really precious to make you virtually inactive,
then again I know those feelings and I would easily (or almost easily) neglect UT for some hot Necris girl too. :wink:
But know, Vendor once told me a quote I've never forgotten sincerely. It was about when I moaned I miss some players like Pike and DarkHOld, why don*t they play anymore he said "Things go on...". It*s so damn true. But this also can be interpreted vice versa. If you ever feel alone in RL suddenly, know that you can come back and fully re-enter the world of the tournament anytime cus the brotherhood of fragging never forgets about those that build it up and made it what it is today.

P.S.: ICEE, I had a look for *.dem, *.zip and WJF and Truff (terms) on my harddisk but I found nothing (the demo), just Headshots old UTX (Bosskins_WJF_Headshot). Do you know the name of the demo file or Zip. I cant tell if I still might have it but I know I HAD it, so if you know the file name I can look on several backup CD*s :)

I will be around as much I was the last couple of months, which is not so much as it used to be. Was just a post, explaining why. And off course to explain why I resigned as a admin, to avoid raising questions from your side. So just starting at the bottom again, as a member enjoying a chat or some shooting once in while.

I'm not gonna respond to all replies you gave me. But I really appreciate all of them, some where even heart warming

:oops: I know playing bass is a though job m8, were the engine of the band. We screw up and the rest will follow. A real under appreciated job for sure !! But RSI you know what I mean. No more plectrum, going 250 bps on this little things not even worthy to call strings or trying to get your fingers in those little frets.

And my skills will be most likely newbie at the moment, so hope to see you on the member server soon. But be aware if it's insta, aiming is the same as riding a bicycle >> you will never forget how to do it :wink:

I formed this band with some colleagues for fun, to relieve some stress. But the little project got out of hand a bit :D Would love to make a demo, but at the moment we only play the classic metal covers from bands like black sabbath, ac/dc, metallica and offcourse lots of Iron Maiden.

First have to finish the website and making a band logo (poor me :roll: ) and we have to find a singer. The current one isn't really motivated and always question if he wil show up on practice.

And were all not so good in making lyrics, so be patience a bit.

:lol: That was pure fun indeed. I don't have any demo's of that unfortunatly. Perhaps on a old back-up CD of UT, I will have to check for that.

It was my first CTF match, didn't play that before. So didn't have a clue on what to do, so that's how my defending skills where born :wink:

Forgive me for the ripper spamming, but we were a sniping clan and couldn't find any sniper rifle on those maps, since I never played them before. So now other option then to ...... :lol:
