View Full Version : WANTED: Christmas UT Maps
Truff
21-08-2005, 05:05 PM
For the last 3 years, Truffs has put together a Christmas map pack (you can see and download the existing map packs at http://www.truff.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=8#cat). By the third year it was getting exremely difficult to find any new, playable, christmas-themed maps and so I know I'm going to have problems for 2005.
So - this is a request to you mapmakers out there - fancy having a go at a DM and/or CTF map with a seasonal theme? You could even 'decorate' an existing map? The best will be picked to be on the servers for December and to be included in the Truff Christmas Map Pack 2005.
Any suggestions for existing *playable* Christmas maps (some of them just aren't!) also welcome.
PS - these are common reasons that maps are rejected - make sure yours doesn't fail on the following:
- Make sure that you include all required texture/sound/music packages required by the map
- Edited packages having the same name as the original - always make sure that if you edit a package that you rename it to prevent version mismatches
- Don't include spaces or any punctuation characters in your package names - generally these prevent redirected downloads from working

I had prepared a map pack for last year after the halloween one but never got round to putting it on a server. I'll see if I have some maps that aren't in the selection :P .

How about a JB Christmas map?
That would be fine :)
Any type is fine so long as we have a server for it.

Excuse my weird sense of humour but I had this passing thought. If some inventive mapper out there reads this, I'd love to see something called MH-AttackOfTheKillerFurTrees be made .

Hmm... Bit of a grey area :?
It's certainly not ok to profit from using copyrighted material but the maps are not being sold, so I'm not sure what laws would apply.
In any case it would be polite to ask the record company who own the copyright beforehand. You never know, they may well agree to a short sample being used, Christmas spirit 'n' all! :) It may just be a simple case of copyright acknowledgement or worst case scenario, they may demand royalty payments! 8O

Actually any copying without permission is going to be copyright infringement. For game music (which let's be honest isn't the most important part!) for maps you are creating, maybe look for music released under a Creative Commons license - you get legal, free music, and the artist gets a bit of exposure.
Not that I am exactly crying for starving record companies ;)

Nelly how did you make snow? :( i cant find a way to do it
FoamyGal
03-10-2005, 06:05 PM
Snow is being done by using a lot of animated mask sheets, little snowflakes that you set to Vpan downways. it looks crap that way but maps like Zeto use it. I use colorful snowflakes (=magic) in 2 of my maps generated by an emitter, falling down from the top of the map. If you are interested I will find you the link where I had it from, i am on gf*s computer atm without favorite list but can find it for you later if you want :)

thanks, id like to know what textures there are to make these sheets with? is it a stars one?
FoamyGal
04-10-2005, 01:45 AM
Yeah I think that was the usual way to make these flakes.
If you open Zeto you can see the way the sheets are used to make the snow
as well as which texture was used.
The snow actor that I mentioned is far more realistic, then again it has a disadvantage - it eats Framerates like cornflakes, so maybe you are better off with the sheets in bigger areas. :)

there is a pile of snow :P but its only 8 units high so u can hardly see on the pic, im gonna have to reduce the snow abit cos its a bit sluggish.

Davis :!: - btw, for your map:
The ambient ancient UAX package features windchimes (light tones like the wind tickling a tinkerbell). This might be great for your map if it features a high point like a roof or tower (Where the wind would be).
Just a thought. I used that sound for exactly those places in one of my older maps. :)

bit late answer but ok, maybe its still usefull.. :P
Davis - The snow i'm using in my map is created by a particle system wich is also used in DM-Deck-40.
It looks great because the snowflakes really fall independantly in space, so its not a sheet with snow on it.
I think it's the same thing FoamyGal is talking about, and it indeeds eats FPS
The map i posted a pic of, im not gonna finish it because i found the snow should be only in low-detailed area's so you get a decent FPS.
(in my pic-map, the room only is too detailed also btw it got like 400+ polys, fps falls to around 30 when you do some mayhem in that room, i got P4 2.4ghz + geforce4Titanium)
Then again in a low-detail area with a polycount under 100, you can put quite a lot of snow without bad fps. 8)
Tho i have no idea how it goes on less fast machines...
My aim is to always maintain the maximum fps my machine can do, when walking around the map, i figure less fast machines will run the maps fine if my machine can do constant 120fps (doesnt get higer than 120 cos my refresh rate is 120hz).
I think your maps looks low-detailed enough to put a nice amount of particle-system-snow in it. But if you want the same amount of snow falling as in your pic, then you'd rather keep it the sheet-way.
I can send you along with the particle system, some nice snow-particle bitmaps if you want em.

yep its a verrryyyy low detailed map (the idea of it) but still creates low fps problems :( im working on it tho but havent touched it for few days. i think i'll stick with the sheets and think about a different place for it or keep the snow outside.

Yes it is possible, all you need is a trigger and a special event with a good crunch sound.

@Nelly
Nahhh ;)
The particle System I talk about is not the one of Bot 40, that one is even devouring more fps. The thing I used is called "Precipitation Generator."
@Davis
FInally I took it out of my (chaos...) bag. Heres the Page of the guy who did the script.
http://www.planetunreal.com/slick/v2_custom_scripts.htm
Good fun for all who are interested in making snow or like I did, colorful drops ("magic") raining down in a cylindrical arena map.
Be advised the Sheets solution doesn*t look best but it*s best FPS, some people just wanna play (turning off coronas we create with care...) so decide yourself if you use the deluxe snow or keep your sheets, Davis :)
