View Full Version : Moving Shock-Combo
I have been trying to master moving shock-combos lately. It is very difficult to do .. the timing is very hard to get a hold of. Has any one else tried this move ?

Personally i reckon it's only possible with cheating bots installed
After about 5 mins of practicing them, I managed to hit one, which I was pretty proud of

its easy
just shoot the ball
move
and hit the ball with primary fire
haha!:P
ofcourse not that easy and even harder to do it online
only thing that helps is training
start with horizontal moving, i think its the easiest
i rarley use the asmd, but when, i try to do stuff like

Cool! I was hoping someone would put up a movie link.
Mine have been getting slowly better over time, although they are woefully inconsistant.
Obviously, you can pull off the stationary combo. Next i would suggest a "strafing" combo. Fire off a ball, keep the mouse as still as possible, and strafe to one side then try combo'ing the ball as you strafe your crosshair back over it.
Using instant-hit weapons more often will help to improve your aim, if you want to progess onto true moving combos.
What I found more easy was combo'ing someone else's balls ( 8O ). For practice, if you can, get a mate to stand opposite you and fire off Shock Balls towards you and combo them.

It's not so hard - if you have a decent and steady ping. The real skill is doing it when somebody is shooting at you. :)
Also helps - keeping your movements to two axis instead of three (ie, forward and down, rather than forward, left and down makes it easier) - but with loads of practice you can do it reliably and under pressure. If you're accurate with primary asmd, you can combo all over the place. :)
There is a great demo of it, but I forget where now, maybe Clan Viking's pages if it's still there. Played on Ctf-Lavagiants it showed a guy firing alt's through all three of the middle tunnels, then translocating to the other side and combo'ing each one.
Unless you have bouncy ping, practice will get you doing it time and again.
when I was practicing them I was moving around in a circle, so basically the opposition would find it harder to hit me. I think I am going to practice stuff like sika's combo

i tend to hit my combo's better when i'm in the game rithme
it may sound weird but that's the way i experienced it
It's when u stop trying to hit them and just hit em :)

EveryBody Was shock comboing,
It all started by some lightning,
In fact it was a lil bit frightning,
how everybody was shock comboing,
There were funky firemen from funky fire town,
they were putting out the rifles and they never let you down,
There was a fire in the hall, straight away they got the call,
they put the fire out before the redeemers melt,
EveryBody Was shock comboing,
It all started by some lightning,
In fact it was a lil bit frightning,

best way to practise is offline, I used to do it on lavagiant 'cause you've got loads of space there.
Try it moving from one side to another and then slowly try different combo's.
When you get better at the combo's you can try the following:
I used to practise on the Rocket Arena server with JT. Both walking in a big circle and then trying to combo the other one, great practise 'cause you have to aim @ your oponent instead of thin air. :P
gl
I was practicing one lava giant yesterday, I mean practicing with my shock combos. i'll do a bit more everyday, as practice makes perfect, huh ?

yeah, it is difficult, but once you learn, you find that alt firing the ball at where your target is going to be, then moving and primary shooting the ball when it gets to the target gets easier and easier... i find the hardest thing to compete with is the ping. offline i can move combo like 90% of the time. online about 40%... but im still trying.
try getting a large open map, and firing 5 alt fire balls in any direction, then follow them and shoot them.... it does get easier.
http://www.thechaosparadox.co.uk/movingcombo.gif
so small!
master a running forwards and shooting the ball in front of you, then when your good at that start strafing and keepin the ball in your sight.

special training, which confuses the mind less!
it only occured to me recently that the problem that people get with hitting the combo is the primary fire is sooo pretty....
lets get rid of that!
(assuming that you have edited the user.ini file before)
code:
x=set shockbeam drawscale 0
and when playing (offline) press x (or the key you've assigned)
alternatively, from the console
code:
set shockbeam drawscale 0
yeah, i know its the same thing, but it gives people who don't know about editing the ini.
this will not reset till you either;
restart the game (the changes don't save)
or
reset the "set shockbeam" command.
code:
z=set shockbeam drawscale 0.44
you can do it in one key if you want to, but im sure you're not really interested!
Great reply tinka. but what you suggested on the second post .. what does it do ??
tinka_b3ll
15-07-2005, 04:37 PM
Great reply tinka. but what you suggested on the second post .. what does it do ??
it gets rid (temporarily)(sp?) of the primary fire (visually). i know it seems stupid... but its not connecting a combo... its just putting your crosshair on the ball and shooting. the primary fire is instant hit, but the visualisation is milliseconds slow... by turning it off, it just seems to make it easier to hit.
ps. this dont work online, so its not a cheat, its more of a practise tool!

On the subject of moving combos, here's how I function :
1 - Locate potential target.
2 - Guess a spot where a combo is most likely to do damage while leading the target according to roughly how long a ball will take to travel there.
3 - Shoot ball in the general direction of that spot.
4 - Position crosshair at the spot.
5 - When the crosshair touches the edge of the ball, fire. <= thanks to [SAUF]Champman for making me understand this ^^ .
Also, a tip is to use a transparent dot + circle crosshair. The circle is a good visual guide as you know when to shoot when it coincides with the ball.

Oh, forgot. If you want to see some really superb combos, download these demos :
Hypno (http://downloads.clansmiley.com/hypno.zip)
thanks for the adivce. i've been practicing them lately and theyre getting better :D
P.S. what do you do with the downloaded content ? :? how do you play them ?
Azura
18-08-2005, 01:11 PM
Hmm, if you're not familiar with demos, now's a good time to start as they can be quite useful for observing other players.
First, get hold of Usaar33's demo manager. There's the old version, 2.0, that comes as a umod (double click to install) and there's an updated version that can download missing files but has to be installed manually.
http://download.beyondunreal.com/fileworks.php/astaley/udemo20.zip
http://download.beyondunreal.com/fileworks.php/astaley/udemo30beta.zip
Next, drop any .dem files you have into Unrealtournament/System. To view the demo, launch UT and then go in the mods menu to bring up Demo Manager.
At this point, you will see a list at the bottom indicating what files are needed (these are maps, textures, mutators and mods that were active on the server at the time). If none are missing, you should be able to play the demo. If some are missing, however, note their names down and attempt to download them if asked. If download is unsuccesful, you can attempt to search for the file on Google.
Sometimes, you will get a message saying that files are outdated. This is usually fixed by using the latest versions of relics.u, epiccustomodels.u and multimesh.u.

hi
is there a command i can type in console to make a demo of myself or do i have to download some sort of programme?
And i watched that video omg is it real that dude is a genius and he never misses and i want to see the other film he talks about in the readme file lol
Azura
18-08-2005, 06:02 PM
Yes, there is a commmand. It works as follows.
To record a demo named gamedemo : demorec gamedemo
This will create a file called gamedemo.dem in system and will continue recording until either the game finishes, you close UT or you enter this command :
stopdemo
To view the demo, the command is as follows :
demoplay gamedemo
For third person view : demoplay gamedemo?3rdperson
For time-based playback : demoplay gamedemo?timebased
Note that Demo Manager is capable of playing back demos with the touch of a button.

i found fraps to slow my game down so i used fraps to make movies by recording playbacks of demos, demo manager is a great add-on for recording your games and then use fraps to change them into avi's by recording a demo.

he is also "inverted". That means he has an advantage overall. He sent me a webpage to explain what an inverted person is, but I cant remember it. :(
the mx1000 is a £50 mouse.
I tried the combo where he fires at the corner of the map (up high) uses the jump boots to land on the ledge and then hits the combo. 2/3 I hit :D

Sounds like good progress. Keep it up ;) .
Inverted simply means that you're more used to using your mouse like a joystick. Up is down and down is up. It's a bit like the difference between right and left-handed person. Incidently, kobhi4ev mentionned that it makes aiming easier for him.
Azura, if u have him again on irc or whatever, plz ask him if he doesnt mind that I put the video on frontfile... i guess it's no problem, but i took no authorization

The MX1000 is Logitech's first lazer mouse. It's *supposed* to be more precise than an optical one.
As for doing combos, I advise you play to adjust your mouse sensitivity a little. It should be set so that you can still easily turn around but low enough so that it cancels out any twitch movements that are produced by your wrist. Also try to use your forearm to move your mouse around.

Well the Lazer is an excellent mouse.
If you*d been with TrufF already in the old forum you might*ve remembered my moving combo post - beside like a half dozen mouse posts. I was inverted , then this year learned to play regular - aiming is easier in regular thats for sure but dropping rockets on the ground is harder in regular, so if you are regular and wanna do combos - stay regular. ;)
The lazer is the best mouse from the "feeling in the hand" that i had. It grips and glides like a dream. However I could not get used to it - as I am not into ergo shaped mice - and had to return it. A big factor to consider. If you did not have a ergo mouse yet - forget the Lazer. I could not move my crosshair hoizontally from left to right, there was always up and down (diagonal).
Sum people I know who are like the best fragger you can find (in ESR and in reg weapons) don*t use any hightech. One uses a cheap 15$ optical mouse (no brand), the other a ball mouse (!) so u can trust me when i tell you what people told me before when I had just the same questions - it*s not the mouse that makes you a good player. I*m sure you can practice move combos right with the mouse you just use. Trust me. I tested like 7 different mice and returned to my old woolworth one every time. Including the Lazer and the Razer Diamondback1600. If it has performed well so far - there is NO reason to try to become inverted and no reason to change the mouse. Rather find someone to praccy the stuff you want with. THats the only thing you need. :)
I only use a ball mouse - standard one that came with the comp, never thought of buying a new mosue tbh.
I didn't play UT when the old forums existed :D

That was actually a nice frag ^^ . Shooting a ball at such an angle and near the ground can be awkward.
Just done a really nice combo on bedrooms too - efc was leaving through mousehole, shot a ball before, used the jump pads to get a bit of hight and then fired my primary fire in the air to complete the shock. Shame I didn't have it on demo ..

My advice works the best for moving combos really!
<retarded_mushro> how are you at hitting moving combos?
<Abnormal> by pointing and shooting!
<retarded_mushro> yeah, but if its not straight, i.e. move out of line with the ball and re-aim to combo it
