i uninstalled UT and reinstalled becuase I could no longer find my system folder. Despite the reinstall (and the removal of cahce cleaner) I am left with a UT folder that contains another folder called "cache". This folder is filled with .tmp files, none of which i can open. I have no idea where my system folder has vansihed to. I cant even play now because I cant uninstall the 12 and 13 udc dll thingies.

HELP!!!

hmm...

uninstall, delete all UT folders, clean the registry perhaps? reinstall. can't see how that wouldn't work...

leave cache cleaner out of the equation for now if that works - its obviously causing problems.

dunno what else to suggest.

Hi mate

it should be enough to delete or just rename the dll's you mentioned in your UT/System folder.
But after you have deinstallied UT 8O , you can probably delete the whole UT folder (unfortunately all downloaded maps/skins etc. are lost :( )

The cache cleaner should not cause the problems.
Its safe to delete all tmp - Files manually - but cache cleaner does it anyway.

Dont worry, after deleting the UT folder and reinstalling, UT should work again :)

Hint: Make a backup of your UT folders(everything under "Unreal Tournament") from time to time and you will never have to install UT again.
It can be played without installing from you copy :D
If anything goes wrong, just copy your backup back to the original.

regrettably it doesnt. I removed all traces of UT from my system and reinstalled..still no system folder, though I saw it create one as UT was installing. Again I was faced with a UT folder within which was another folder called 'cache' and no system folder anywhwere to be found...I have searched (yes, hidden fiels and folders as well....)Nothnig shows up...i really dont know what to do, and I grow weary of installing and unistalling...

Thanks for the help tho.

What a conundrum!

You did try cleaning the registry, for both UT and cache cleaner? If you're not sure about this, you might want to hang on till someone can say for certain what to delete... Anyone? Tho I think any keys with Unreal or UT in them might be safe to delete, no idea about cache cleaner tho... (make a back of the registry first tho!)

Perhaps the location of the install directory has something to do with it? I have UT installed at: C:\Games\UnrealTournament\

If its any help this how my current UT install looks:

C:\Games\UnrealTournament\
C:\Games\UnrealTournament\Cache\
C:\Games\UnrealTournament\HeadHuntersClassic\
C:\Games\UnrealTournament\Help\
C:\Games\UnrealTournament\Help\JailbreakIII\

C:\Games\UnrealTournament\Textures\
C:\Games\UnrealTournament\Web\

Another thing, have you any software installed that might be interfering with the installation. Virus checkers, etc? It might be an idea to install in safe mode and in a totally different directory than the one you've been using.

Don't worry saus, we'll get this fixed!

So far this is the only thing that it has happened to. I can still find everything else, and my system otherwise runs fine. I use well up to date AV and it scans nightly....not to say a virus isnt possible, but this seems to be the only way it is manifesting itself...Tbh I noticed it shortly after i installed cahce cleaner :?

sigh...

ps. Thanks for the support Xepha, this is really a really annoying situation

Sausage,
This is what has been happening to quite a lot of people.
There was a thread in the old forum
|3illy had to reformat just to get UT to re install after losing most files
Flapz lost his ini's and was lucky enough to be using XP and used the system restore.
Switzz lost his ini's
2 nights ago i lost my user.ini.
I dont use cache cleaner as im not windoze so its something else doing it.
It needs looking into.
People might get sick of re-installing and look for other games then bye bye ut99

:D Cool, thanks for that snows; You are right, people will give up andd move on. I dont know what the issue is. I am stumped.

I use XP, but (and I hate revealing how unskilled in the way of the PC I am) (tho i keep stating it :? ) I dont really know how to use system restore....Time for a google search methinks :D

Thanks again

There's the clue - all those you mention use silly characters in their nicks. I, on the other hand, use only God's own ASCII and have no problem :)

Hmmm, no odd characters there either, but if that is true then every clan/community is gonna have problems including [TrufF] ?

So, UT's gone, cache cleaner's gone. Registry cleaned? Disabled all software (virus scanner's etc) before installing? Tried safe mode install? Hit it with a hammer?

Well, i'm pretty much out of ideas... Possibly post of some other UT forums. Maybe get in touch with the cache cleaner author (since this seems to be what has caused the problem). Wouldn't you know it tho, the forums at http://www.utcache.com/ut.asp aren't working...

Anyone else?

The system restore only works if u set a point in the past before hand, and its best to set a point every week or so incase your virus prone or just thick enough to click on links which are trojons =P.
I think i got the right thing =P if not correct meh ;)

Hit it with a hammer?
Yeah!! that helps everytime!!

Anyone else?
Yup - install UT on an other machine (preferably XP) and copy the whole UT-directory on your copmuter. Should work (that's what I learned on my first and only LAN - LOL)

hope it helps :D

I dont know if this helps but i recently copied my whole UT folder from one drive to another so i could do a fresh install of Windows XP with SP2 intergrated.

While the UT was on the other drive i was still able to play UT and after the install of the new windows i copied the whole folder back again and it still works fine.

I used to have cache cleaner on but dont at the moment becuase i have just not got round to putting it back on yet.

The only way we can work out what the problem is, is by getting a whole lot more info from everyone and looking for a pattern. Everyone that has had a problem has either done something the same, installed the same version of the same software, got something missing etc etc. It could be anything but more info is needed to work it out.

I'd be happy to provide any information I can. I'm not prone to clicking on trojans lol, and I stay clear of dodgy sites (as best I can  ) I have never been prone to viruses or the like, because, tho I may be relativly new, I was aware from the start of the suspect nature of much on the net etc. I was taught to be paranoid right from the start.

It makes sense to me that there must be a common link...but I think it must be a UT related thing, as nothing else seems to be affected.

What other info can I provide?

thanks,

Saus

Venom,

3 of the people i mentioned all had problems after UT crashed.
I lost mine too when it seg faulted.(linux crash)

Thats the only common thing so far.
Maybe if we could find out what causes the crashes?

k, 1st of all, the folder with cach in it and lots of temp files is your old ut folder, the installation doesn't create those files and that folder, playing the game online does (cache = downloaded uncompressed stuff, the tmp files are downloaded compressed files, the .tmp files can always be deleted without problems, and the cache folder can always be saved somewhere to keep a new install from downloading everything again.

Now, for the problem, 1st of all, reinstall to another location, patch it up to 4.36 and DON'T install any mods yet...
Zip that new folder up and safe it somewhere before playing... this will be your backup zip file...

now either place the cache dir you have into your new install directory or other way around (all files and dirs from new install to old dir)
Depending on your specific setup, you would only loose the ability to "install" umods with a double click, but there is a simple and very clean reg fixer for that which works great (or you can use a reg file which i made for this purpose, but never trust anything from anyone, always trust google for "ut registry fix" :-))

If you ever want to find out where your files are, and you have an icon for starting a file - just right-click it and select Properties. Note the path, then find that path in Explorer.

I used to be able to do this, but now it leads me to the cache file filled with tmp files. Tho i deleted them and they seem to have returned. Ill try your method V. Thanks for the suggestions all :D

This might be are rather dumb suggestion, and one you've already looked into, but are you sure your UT directory isn't hidden? That is, have you set Explorer to show all files, whether they're normal, hidden, system, whatever?

Still mulling this over...

Someone mentioned about hidden files/folders. There are, in Windows XP, folders designated 'Super-Hidden' folders. These are usually critical OS files/folders, such as System Restore. Even changing the option to view all hidden files/folders doesn't reveal these folders in windows explorer.

A bit of registry editing is needed to show up these Super-Hidden folders:

Hit Windows+R. Type 'regedit' (without quotes), hit enter.

Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced

and find the entry labelled SuperHidden. Right click it, select Modify, and change it to 0 (zero).

Exit Regedit, and go look for your UT/System folder.

This may, or may not work... I was just thinking that because the folder is called 'system' and windows can be funny about what folders are called, it may have decided to super-hide it...

Another thing, with your UT shortcut on the desktop - Right click, select properties. There is a button labelled 'Find Target..', click that and it should open windows explorer and take you right to the folder where the UnrealTournament.exe file is located (which should also be the elusive system folder)...

Phew...

I don't think UT will install itself as a super hidden folder... but thas just my thought :-)

This is probubly to do with SP2. There have been reports of it 'losing' parts of UT. I lost my user.ini file on one PC, but not on the other when I installed it.
