I have a problem and wondered if anyone else had too.
It takes me 3 - 4 maps to warm up to a half decent playing ability
Im fine for a further 2- 3 maps then my mouse hand starts to get really stiff and i lose feeling
in it, and it aches so bad.
I usually carry on playing like any other UT addict would until the point i cant aim anymore and my palm and wrist is on fire.
Its so bad by the time im done i can no longer make my little finger touch my thumb.
I dont use a mousemat, only my desk. The mouse I have is a very small one though, maybe thats the problem, but i just dont know.
Maybe someone else had this and found a cure/help.
I would be greatful for any tips

8O Yeah I can sympathise. I got a mat with a gel pad for the wrist cos it was getting silly. I still get stiff if I play too long but not so bad by any means. Ouch!

Try raising or lowering your chair so your elbow is at the same level as your mouse, then move your mouse mat back, away from the edge of your desk. You should be able to comfortably rest your forearm on the desk.
I prsonally don't use a gel pad but a mate of mine finds them much more comfortable so it may be worth trying one. Also a larger mouse (such as the Logitech MX series) will definately help. Those small ones are designed for infrequent use with notebook computers since the track-pads etc. that are built into the notebook are usually not very good.

Do you ever get stiff?
All the time...
During more rigorous sessions wristache can sometimes be a problem. I usually try loosening my grip or using my other hand - tho movement is usually not quite so fluid...

My cat had the same problem Dobby, it was easily solved though.
A small op to remove a couple of things and he was fine.
Maybe we could have a whip round and save the money to get you "fixed"?
Or maybe someone has a couple of building bricks we can borrow.

Snowie - the answer to your problem with the stiff wrist is probably a gel pad. :)
Davis - same answer 8O

The size of the mouse might be a problem depending on just how small the mouse is. i used to own a standard micoroft optical but i used to get pains accross my palm. I changed to the logitech Mx310 which suited my hand better as its got some extra curves to support my thumb and pinky.
As already stated it could also be a result of the positioning of your arm. i read into the gel pad situation a while ago and i found that it was recomended to NOT use these as they cut off circulation to the wrists a bit. this might also depend on the way the hand is positioned though.
hope this helps:)

Repetitive Strain Injury - do something about it now!!!! before its too late.
This can seriously mess you up so do what you can to minimise the impact to your arms and wrist.

Snowie hunny, 3 years ago I would have laughed at the quote above but I wish there was a vitriol around back in those days.
I kept on playing resulting in even more pain and the fact I couldn't play guitar or UT anymore. It's almost 3 years later and I'm still not fully recovered. The moment you enter stage 3 of RSI the damage is inrevirsible. I had stage 2, which will take 5 years to recover. Your in the very first stage and will be fine within a few weeks if ........
I posted some advice in this thread, the 3th post to be exactly. Laugh at me if you want, be wise and do something with it.

also Medic and Villordsutch posted very good advice in there.
At least take little breaks each 15 minutes or so. Even a little stretch of 5 seconds will do the trick.
All the best hun :fluffle:

Tbh i was kinda putting it down to old age :?
but it is getting more severe and happens quicker than it used to
So time to do something about it
Thanks for the link heady x Im just digesting whats in there.
Ive been using icepacks then warm water then back to ice because someone said as we get older our circulation gets slower and hot/cold helps.
Change of UT lifestyle coming up pdq
Thanks all

A bit late to the party, but I get cramp where my thumb "pulls" in towards my palm - I put this down to the fact that in the course of doing my job, I use fairyl heavy duty pliers and wrenches, but perhaps as someone already posted I should look at my mouse and possibly choose a larger one that doesn't cause my hand to be so scrunched up??

the more relaxed I am the better I play, I used to have tense hands and shoulders but have learned to go wit the flow, I never get stressed limbs now - but my eyes get a little sore after a while...

Ok update
Ive been playing less and instead of leaving my hand on the mouse waiting for the next map ive been using a stress ball. I run my hands under the hot water tap before i play and keep rubbing them together as i feel mouse one starting to get cold.
Ive also raised my chair like advised,, so my wrist is actually "on" the desk now, instead of it being on the edge (cutting circulation no doubt)
Im so glad i made this post because it looks like a common problem for UT players and early remedy's are the key to preventing things getting serious.
Thanks again Heady for the link and hope your hands improve soon :fluffle:
(ps: wanna get the toast and i'll get the butter? )
Be nice if anyone else who tries the advice and notices and improvement could let us know
