View Full Version : Opengl settings
Hi peeps
I d/l the opengl thing from truffs download section works real good :)
But
The settings page imo is a total waste of time (who the fook wants to know wat the weird words meanz ffs just tell us wat to set em too for best performance)
to that end can anyone that has also used that version of opengl and found best settings for performance post em for meh to copy ;) I tried messing about with them and at 1 point had a cracking setup untill with my usuall meddling i managed to fook it rt up and had to hit defaults :(
All the setups I've found posted round different forums seem to have different things in the opengl section which dont help so i'm asuming different versions have different wording/settings in them ?
thx Grey

I assume you're referring to this page?:
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/settings.html
Agreed, it doesn't make a great deal of sense if you don't know what it means. Although it tells you what they mean so you can decide whether to turn those options on or off.
But anyway, a quick search (actually just a quick scroll down of this forum) turned up this thread:
http://truff.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=184
An equally quick search on the old forums revealed this:

Pffft!
www.google.com diddnt help at all :roll:
all I found there was a girl that would open anything as long as I left my credit card details first and I almost got signed up for new windows from opengl window instalations :evil:
but I did sort my problem all by meself which is a first :) seems some setting in opengl caps ur framerate and I was playing with a framerate of 59 :x but I aint got a clue which little bugger does it so I learnt me lesson it default setting for me from now on :wink:
btw how do u do those little quote box things ? and if u think im gonna look on google for "box" u got no chance at my age some of those sites could kill meh :roll:

Tee-Hee! :lol:
I'm not an expert on OpenGL but i think the setting you are looking for is in your ..\UnrealTournament\System\UnrealTournament.ini file under this heading:
[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Refreshrate=70
Refreshrate, I believe, should be set at your monitors refreshrate. (70 is just an example. Mine would, for instance, be 85). You can find this from your monitor settings buttons on the front of your monitor, or by: right-click desktop > properties > settings > advanced > monitor. (or there abouts) Look for something like Screen Refresh Rate - 70 Hertz.
Possibly this guide will explain things a little more clearly (i would recommend reading it all):
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ut/
or you can get straight to the opengl stuff from here:
http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/ut/ut-tweak-7.shtml
Lastly, for info on the little box things, ie quotes go here:
http://truff.net/modules.php?name=Forums&file=faq&mode=bbcode#4
You can follow that method, or (the much easier method) instead of clicking the http://truff.net/modules/Forums/templates/subSilver/images/lang_english/reply.gif button at the bottom of the page, click the http://truff.net/modules/Forums/templates/subSilver/images/lang_english/icon_quote.gif button to the right of the post you wish to quote.
Hope this helps!

Just put all this stuff under the heading "[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]"

just be careful with this line:
RefreshRate=75
it's important that it matches YOUR monitor refresh rate.
mines 60 so my line reads:
RefreshRate=60
I have found that line to be the one crucial thing that can make UT either not work or force into using software mode.

Coronas=False 8)
Experiment with GammaOffset=0.000000 differ it iinbetween +0.3 and -0.3 for "lighter" images.

you might wanna add
GammaCorrectScreenshots=True
for all you screenshot hoe's
this command corrects the gamma when a screenshot is taken, i.e they dont come out dark.
And for all you Radeon owners out there, enable Truform by adding the following (makes things nice and round). Dont forget to make sure that in your graphics driver properties that Truform is application controlled.
UseTruform=True
TruFormMinVertices=0
TruFormTessellation=3
Thx Xepha :)
tbh it's that settings page that gave me the initail problems it covers most of the settings but I have loads more in my opengl bit that arn't on that page and the settings page in ur first post dont cover them too good either

seems to be the same as the 1 Anoobis posted but all in a diferent order ? does that make any difference ?
I did try messing with some of the settings using the settings help page but tbh a little knowledge is dangerous and unbeknown to me I somehow set the framerate to not go over 59 when usually it's about 180 - 250
worse thing was I diddn't notice it was the framerate till yesterday and totally wasted my 4 days off over easter getting crap scores on the servers blameing the rest of the world for using their internet connection over the holidays and givein me bad lag
So I would like to take this chance to make a global appoligy to the Worlds population for the nasty slurs I spouted over the easter period (with the exception of France ofcourse)
but the settings I posted seem to work ok and my scores on the servers are back to normal :D so unless someone can spot a bad setting I think ill leave well alone

the frame rates are nothing to be worried about.
you screen refresh rate i hope is 60hz and therefore your fps will be 60. you can allow v-sync which means the game'll give you as many frames as possible. i personally am stuck on 60. you should have your screen refresh rate at 72 or higher if possible though.
does that make sense?

I have tired this OpenGL fix before, It seems fine offline but I've experienced more lag online then with regular Direct3D but it could just be me.
Screen refresh rate is 85
the frame rates made 1 hell of a difference 59 verses 180+ is like racing a mini stuck in first gear against a F1 race car
as for using d3d tbh I swore by d3d for almost 5 years in UT but outter frustration I switched over to opengl a month or so ago and it's totaly amazing screens r so clear and game is way faster I would say I wished I'd swaped over ages ago but tbh I dont think opengl was this good ages ago give it a go m8 u can always swap back
my UT hasn't been so good since I first got cable and everyone else was still on 56k modems :D

Hi all
Just jumping in with a noob point of view as I'm just about to try all the above I have a 17 inch TFT with I think a fixed Screen refresh rate will it make any diference :?:
btw:Loads of good info from all thanks .

ok the way the textures are seen will be different, they will be different colours some times and you may get some more detail especially if you put
DetailTextures=True
if you are happy with D3D then don't fell you have to change
give me a min and i'll upload 2 screenies with different renderers
And Grey, you're being a bit silly with 'like racing a mini stuck in first gear against a F1 race car'
there is NO difference in game speed. thats set by the server.
and above 72fps you will notice no difference. not unless the fps is changing from 80 to 40 to 80 when going through badly mapped areas.
You will notice no difference either when you go above your screen refresh rate. can you see your screen flickering 60 times a second??
remember movies are only at 24fps....
Thats as mebby m8 but all I know is I changed some setting in opengl and my UT went to crap I was scoreing 50-80 points per map and couldnt hit shite then I noticed my fps was only 59 both on and off line so I hit default setting for opengl fps went back to normal and score went back to around 150-200 for most maps so as far as I can see fps make a big difference :roll:
on the other hand refresh rate dont seem to do much at all just makes screen flicker and look bitty
but tbh I know jack about puters long as it turns on and off as required and me game works i'm happy :D

I do know what the running too fast feel is like.
the way around it I found was to put on AA and AF therefore forcing the grafics to work harder and thus slowing UT down to 130ish FPS.
you try this with verical sync instead so that the frame rate doesn't rise about the monitor refresh rate - but personally I don't like the way it makes UT feel and the mouse has always felt weird when I do this.
back to too fast feel - what happens is when the grafics card doesn't have much to render like when you running closer to wall - everything actual speeds up.
I call it 'fast feet' cause you can actually hear you players footsteps going faster.
that's offline - online is a diaster cause you are going too fast for the server and you end up being thrown back to where the server expected you to be.
it feels like really bad lag and god knows what it must look like to other players.
this only happens when I have gotten a FPS of 250+

I had the same problem with all those OpenGL settings too. All I wanted was a good set of recommended defaults. I also found that in the settings if I set refresh rate to 0 it should have run as fast as possible, but it kept on running at 60 fps instead. In the end I found an OpenGL umod on the suicidal warriors web site from a guy called Snake Plisken. It does the whole job for you, installs the OpenGLDrv.dll and modifies the user.ini.
The site was at the address: http://www.ajpgraphix.com/sw/default.asp?id=1&ACT=5&content=1&mnu=1 but it appears to be down now. :( Hope it comes back online soon.

I was forced to test the opengl fix on an old pc after getting some terrible results with direct3D, even when tweaked. Although OpenGL is fast it often dropped a lot of frames, but after a lot of tweaking, these settings seemed to work best. The image quality did suffer but is wasn't too bad, but anyway the gameplay is all that should count. No use in looking at the pretty graphics when you're getting your butt kicked =D.
Just modify these settings in UnrealTournament.ini found in C:\UnrealTournament\System

I tried the settings today on the truff servers. They worked pretty good on this old Pentium3 450. I can't dodge like I use to or any make errctic moves, which made aiming very difficult. My eff however wasn't too bad, around 30 to 55 on some maps. UT gets pretty sluggish on large maps. It was really smooth on niven type maps. This setup will do for me, until I can get my regular PC fixed. If you have a sluggish system, I suggest you give it a try.
